Etymology: Formation like ἀχλύ̄ς a. o. (Schwyzer 495) and identical with a Slavic word for `mud', e. g. OCS Russ. ilъ, gen. ila (old u-stem); also Latv. īls `very dark'. Further see Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. v..
